Discover the Art of Ink & Wash Vintage Art

The Ink & Wash Vintage Art Collection showcases portraits created with hand-drawn line work and layered India ink washes. This classic technique, dating back centuries in China and Japan, combines crisp lines with soft tonal washes to create depth, subtle grays, and expressive shading.

The Process

  • Sketching: Start with a precise pencil sketch to define proportions, gestures, and personality.

  • Inking: Use fine brushes or pens to outline details like facial features, hair, and clothing.

  • Layered Washes: Dilute India ink with water and apply in layers to build shadows, depth, and subtle tonal variation.

  • Drying Between Layers: Allow each wash to dry before adding the next to avoid muddying tones.

  • Highlights: Preserve white areas or add subtle touches of white ink or gouache to emphasize key features.

  • Refinement: Rework and adjust as needed to capture texture, dimension, and the desired level of detail.

Technique Applied to the Vintage Ink Artwork on Paper Collection
Earlier this year, inspired by the India Ink & Wash technique, I began exploring delicate shading, line work, and subtle tonal washes. This centuries-old technique, rooted in Chinese and Japanese ink painting, allows for depth, soft transitions, and intricate detail using just ink and water. Its timeless elegance made it a perfect foundation for a small series of Vintage ladies.

While researching vintage illustrations, I became fascinated by the playful elegance of hats from the 1920s–1940s. I incorporated these styles into black-and-white portraits, focusing on shade and tone before outlining the artwork.

Celeste wears a tall flowerpot hat adorned with blooms, inspired by whimsical vintage fashion. Each petal and plume was carefully layered with ink washes to create depth and movement in her profile. Lillian reflects the ornate curves of Art Nouveau through a flowing gown, delicate headband, and subtle jewelry. Soft, layered washes enhance the graceful contours of her figure and features.

These portraits became the foundation for later works such as Queen of Hearts and Once Upon a Time, while also standing on their own as studies in line, shadow, and vintage charm—an homage to a centuries-old technique that continues to inspire.
