Building Abstract Collages Through Layered Geometric Forms

Overlapping colorful geometric shapes and consistent color schemes create collage-style compositions that explore balance, depth, and visual harmony.

Geometric shapes have appeared in artwork for thousands of years, used in textiles, pottery, mosaics, and decorative arts across cultures. Their appeal comes from their simplicity and clarity—shapes that repeat, overlap, and interact to create order, movement, or contrast. In modern times, geometric abstraction became a natural extension of those early designs, shifting toward bold color and clean, contemporary compositions. The Kaleidoscope Series continues this tradition by transforming simple shapes into layered geometric collages built from coordinated color schemes and developed into a collective of seventeen designs.

The Process
The concept traces back to the creation of Bear in Captivity, which was originally inspired by the scrappy appliqué quilting technique—layering pieces of fabric into a collage before defining the final shape. That approach guided the digital method used here: overlapping geometric elements, trimming, arranging, and recoloring them to form modern abstract designs. A similar idea appears in children’s tissue-paper collages, where loose shapes stack and blend to create new colors and simple compositions. Both The Captivity Series and The Kaleidoscope Series build on this same creative principle digitally, using Illustrator, Adobe Color, and AI to create the pieces. Unified palettes connect all seventeen works, so each piece feels related while maintaining its own identity. These designs currently are designed as stand-alone posters and will later pair with animal silhouettes to support themes planned for future literary formats for all ages.

Inspiration & Meaning
The Kaleidoscope Series highlights the versatility of geometric abstract art through intentional color relationships and clean contemporary design. Each collage stands on its own or functions as part of a coordinated set, offering bold visual combinations suited for modern décor. Rooted in the early inspiration of Bear in Captivity and influenced by the collage-based methods behind both The Captivity Series and this expanding collection, The Kaleidoscope Series shows how simple shapes and thoughtful palettes can evolve into expressive, modern works of art.
