The Process
Each illustration began as a light pencil sketch on black card stock. The composition was first designed digitally using clipart as reference, allowing the full continuous-line layout to be planned before drawing. After sketching the image lightly in pencil, the final artwork was traced in one continuous line using a gold pen of choice; for this particular piece, a gold metallic Jelly Roll pen was used. The pencil was then gently erased to leave the clean gold linework. The challenge was creating a complete scene from a single unbroken line, and small adjustments—such as added style to the wisemen’s crowns—helped refine the composition. Three versions were produced: an 8" x 10" framed piece exhibited at the Gift of Art Exhibition in December 2024 and later given as a gift; another 8" x 10" framed to 11" x 14"; and a 9" x 10" unframed piece. Presented in a gold and black frame with a white mat, the artwork achieves a refined, classy presentation that emphasizes contrast and luminosity.
