Advent Basket, created on Museum Quality Scratchbord and framed in a mahogany frame, is an example of an elevated presentation giving special thought to materials and framing selections. Unlike standard scratchboard, this professional-grade surface is thicker and more durable, offering a stable base and smooth finish suited for fine art display. The piece is framed simply yet elegantly, showing how thoughtful presentation can enhance sophistication and overall impact without overwhelming the artwork itself.
The Process
Advent Basket was created using an X-acto knife to scrape away areas of black ink from the Scratchbord surface. The board itself begins white and is coated in black ink; as the ink is removed, the white surface beneath is revealed. Each scrape contributes to forming the image, using the white areas to define shape and texture. In this piece, the technique was used to create a woven basket holding four candles—symbolic of the weeks leading up to Christmas. The design carries a light spiritual tone, reflecting the Advent season while also serving as a refined holiday piece.
The Museum Quality Scratchbord used is approximately 1/8" thick, allowing it to fit directly into the frame without a mat. It sits securely within the frame like a tile and can be easily removed or replaced. Once completed, the piece was placed in a well-crafted frame for a clean, professional presentation that highlights the care taken in both creation and display.
