Structured acrylic paintings use bisecting lines and luminous color to evoke the look and depth of stained glass.
The Geometric Abstracts Series bridges the precision of grids with the vibrancy and radiance of stained-glass and mosaic design. The history of stained glass began with the ancient Egyptians and Romans, who used colored glass for decorative items and simple windows. The art form became prominent in the medieval period—especially in Gothic churches—where stained-glass windows were used to illustrate biblical stories for a largely illiterate population. After periods of decline and revival during the Renaissance and the 19th-century Gothic Revival, stained glass remains a popular art form today, appearing in churches, homes, and contemporary architecture with modern techniques and styles.
The Process
The series includes Stained Glass Acrylic Coffee Cup, Stained Glass Acrylic Flowers, and Stained Glass Acrylic Tea Pot, each created on 8.5" × 16" paper. Each began with a central drawn image—a cup, a teapot, or a vase of flowers—then the page was divided by intersecting lines, creating structured sections. Each section was further broken down and painted in a distinct color, forming a rich mosaic of contrasting tones. When complete, a fine splatter of white paint was added to suggest snow, transforming each piece into a scene reminiscent of a cozy coffeehouse window on a cold winter’s day. The three artworks were designed to balance together as a cohesive set, each created using the same geometric method. Once finished, they were scanned and adapted for reproduction. These stained-glass artwork paintings have been reproduced on products and make beautiful greeting cards and postcards, now available on Zazzle.
Inspiration & Meaning
This series uses a process once reserved for telling sacred stories through color and light to reflect something more familiar to today’s culture—the warmth of a personalized drink, the quiet joy of a reflective moment, and the thoughtfulness of thinking of others. By translating the timeless art of stained glass onto paper, the Geometric Abstracts Series offers a contemporary expression of beauty, comfort, and creativity—transforming everyday scenes into glowing geometric works that feel both modern and timeless.
