The Holiday Scratchboards Collection capture the charm of the season through classic black-and-white artwork created with traditional scratchboard technique. Each piece is carved directly into a black ink–coated surface using an X-acto knife, where every line is etched by hand. The textured strokes reveal the white layer beneath, building contrast, depth, and character that feel both rustic and refined. Presented in warm oak frames and sized for table-top display, these ready-to-hang pieces bring a handcrafted, country-inspired feel to any holiday setting.
The Process
Working on Scratchbord, the artwork begins with a fully black surface that is slowly revealed through deliberate cuts and strokes. Using an X-acto knife, each line is pulled from the inked layer to uncover the white beneath, creating rich textures and tonal variation. The technique allows for spontaneity and fine detail, resulting in artwork that feels both energetic and timeless. The collection includes both horizontal and vertical compositions, featuring the Holiday Train Scene, Holiday Cardinal on a Snowy Branch, Holiday Cardinal, Holiday Dove, Holiday Mouse, Holiday Snowman and Flurries, and Holiday Snowman and Winter Scene. Together, they celebrate winter traditions through contrast, texture, and the expressive quality of hand-carved line.
Inspiration & Meaning
Holiday Scratchboards reflect the warmth of tradition and the quiet spirit of the season. The train carries nostalgia and gathering, the cardinals and dove symbolize peace and renewal, and the snowmen and mouse add a touch of playfulness and cheer. The rustic oak frames enhance the handcrafted surface of each piece, making them a natural fit for cabin lodges, farmhouse-style homes, or spaces decorated for holiday coziness. Their simplicity and texture bring an inviting sense of winter warmth, whether displayed individually or arranged as a seasonal grouping.
