Working with Complimentary Analogous and Contrasting Palettes for Vibrant Color Contrasts
The Light Collection
The Light Collection—comprising Transubstantial Light, Resurgent Earth, and Oblato—explores harmony and rhythm using color relationships. Each composition draws from neighboring hues on the color wheel to produce transitions that feel natural, balanced, and serene. Modern color tools such as Adobe Color and online palette generators provide a way to study how combinations of hue, value, and saturation can evoke different moods—whether emphasizing contrast, unity, or vibrancy. Within this collection, color becomes both structure and subject, offering a meditation on how hue relationships can shape emotional tone and visual energy.
The Process
Each composition began with a deliberate selection of analogous and contrasting color combinations, blended directly on the surface to create smooth gradations from one hue to another. The blending process produced subtle shifts that suggested motion and depth within the boundaries of each square. Once dry, a white circle was painted at the center, then strengthened with additional paint to ensure its brightness remained pure. Fine hatched lines were etched into the gradients, introducing a rhythmic element that contrasts with the soft transitions of color. After completely drying, each work was sealed with Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer, Super High Gloss Finish to protect the surface and accentuate the acrylic’s natural sheen. The collection is painted on square canvas boards designed to fit into matted square frames, reinforcing their unity as a series.
Presentation & Meaning
Beneath the plexiglass, the compositions shimmer with the reflective glow of acrylic paint and the vibrancy of intentional color pairing. Each piece focuses on a single palette, becoming an individual study in color harmony and perception. The interplay of form and light within each square evokes both motion and stillness—a quiet equilibrium between energy and calm. Collectively, the works invite viewers to pause, observe, and consider the emotional resonance that emerges when harmony and color interact.
